Praying for our teachers

As I was on my way to work yesterday, driving through the beautiful canyon I began chanting the Guru Ram Das mantra. Often times I chant in my car, but yesterday I experienced something special. After just a few repetitions of this beautiful mantra Gurmukh, one of my yoga teachers, came to my mind very strongly. As I continued to chant the mantra and feel that strong presence in my mind, I began to dedicate that chant, to her. Feeling gratitude for all that she has taught me the prayer became very deep and powerful. I continued chanting and soon began thinking of all my teachers and sent the Guru Ram Das Blessing to all of them. What an incredible feeling.

We all have a special relationship with our teachers, but often we put them on a high pedestal and seem to forget they are also another human being. Dedicating a prayer to a teacher is empowering and will make you feel deeply connected to your teacher, but in a giving way.

And who are our teachers? Besides the obvious response to the question, go beyond…Your loved ones, your friends, your children, that person you don’t know who said something that lit a spark in you, that person who upsets you…yes, they are all our teachers, even and especially the ones who challenge us. Pray for them, and pray often.

Sat Nam!
